Past continuous (I was doing) 過去進行式
定義：兩個動作同時發生時，但其中一個動作較早開始，當另一個動作出現時，前者仍在進行，所以先開始並還在進行的動作用過去進行式 Was/were –Ving is the past continuous:
A. Study this example situation:閱讀例句
1.Yesterday Karen and Jim played tennis. They began at 10 o’clock and finished at11:30.
→昨天Karen和Jim打網球。他們在10點開始，11:30結束
So, at 10:30 they were playing tennis.
→所以，10:30時他們在打網球
2.They were playing = they were in the middle of playing. They had not finished playing .
→他們在打球=他在正在打球中 他們還沒結束打球
I/he/she/it was playing
We/you/they were doing working etc.
B. I was doing something = I was in the middle of doing something at a
certain time. The action or situation had already started before this time,
but had not finished:
我正在做某事=我正在特定的時間中做某件事。這個動作或狀況已經在這個時間之前
就開始了，但還沒結束
I started doing I was doing I finished doing Past continuous past now
1.This time last year I was living in Brazil.
→去年的這個時間我住在巴西
2.What were you doing at 10 o’clock last night?
→你昨天晚上10點在做什麼?
C.Compare the past continuous (I was doing) and past simple (I did):
對照過去進行式(I was doing)和過去式(I did)
Past continuous (in the middle of an action) 過去進行(正在活動當中)
1.I was walking home when I met Dave.
→我走路回家當中我遇到了Dave (還在走路，就遇到Dave[當時2件事同時進行])
2.Kate was watching television when we arrived.
→當我們到達時Kate正在看電視 (他們到達，還在看電視[當時2件事同時進行])

1.I walked home after the party last night.

something happened in the middle of something else:

1.I was walking along the road when I saw Dave. So I stopped, and we had a chat.

1.When Karen arrived, we were having dinner.
(= we had already started before she arrived)

(= Karen arrived, and then we had dinner)

continuous
一些動詞(像是, know and want)是不能像一般的使用進行式
1.We were good friends. We knew each other well. (not We were knowing)
→我們是好朋友。 我們很熟。
2.I was enjoying the party, but Chris wanted to go home. (not was wanting)
→我很喜歡這個派對，但Chris想要回家。
